Hyundai Kona Electric is acknowledged as the best electric car among Best Small Family Car in the first edition of the TopGear Electric Awards.
Following an impressive test route across nine European countries and with more than 1,600 kilometres covered, Hyundai's highly popular electric SUV is recognized not only for its efficiency and long-range but also for its effortless and good driving experience.
The test was conducted in the form of a 24-hour race, with BBC TopGear Magazine's chief editor Charlie Turner behind the wheel. He used the European fast-charging network to charge a total of 316 kWh during the test and charged up to a maximum of 80 per cent to get the most driving time possible. From the starting line in the Czech Republic, the trip went through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France, Luxembourg and Belgium, to the Netherlands.
Since its launch in 2018, Kona Electric has continued to convince as an all-rounder with moderate price levels and zero emissions. The car mixes practical solutions with long-range and fantastic performance. The latest updates that have been made include better-connected services and the possibility of three-phase onboard chargers, which has made the total package even more appealing. We think it's very nice that TopGear appreciates the strengths of Kona Electric.
Kona Electric has been a huge success for Hyundai in Norway, and together with Hyundai IONIQ electric were two of the ten best-selling cars in Norway in 2019.
From March, Hyundai opened European production of Kona Electric in the Czech Republic, and at the same time, the car increased its range to a total of 484 kilometres. In addition, Kona Electric was given the option of towing, as well as updated suspension setup. Czech production has also drastically cut delivery times at Kona Electric, and a fully normalized delivery situation is expected during the summer of 2020.
With KONA electric, Hyundai is the first brand to offer a 100% electric SUV intended for a large clientele. The KONA electric links two major trends in the automotive industry: a compact SUV and a zero-emission electric transmission.
Two engines are now available: the version with 100 kW / 136 hp electric motor and a battery of 39.2 kWh, or the most powerful version of 150 kW (204 hp) which, according to the new WLTP cycle, allows a maximum range of up to 449 kilometres. Its large trunk of 332 litres or 1114 litres when the rear seats are folded down, emphasises the practicality of its daily use.
Hyundai has positioned its KONA electric in a particularly attractive price range since is available from 31,364 euros.
