The new Toyota PROACE Electric van will be launched in European markets from the fall of 2020. The range includes three body lengths and two different battery sizes, with up to 330 kilometres range. Its clever design ensures that the payload is maintained at 1 tonne, while the maximum trailer weight is 1 tonne.
Customers will be able to choose between two different battery packs to suit different needs. Both are of the lithium-ion type, delivering either 50 kWh (18 modules) with a range of 230km or 75 kWh (27 modules) with a range of 330 km (WLTP).
In their efforts to understand the needs of van customers, Toyota has found that they drive an average of 45 kilometres on a working day, which means that most PROACE Electric clients will not need to charge daily. Maximum performance for both battery sizes is 136 hp, with a maximum torque of 260 Nm. Top speed is electronically limited to 130 km / h.
The battery is located under the floor in the storage room, which means that the room conditions are maintained in relation to the usual PROACE. At the same time, the centre of gravity is lowered, which improves driving characteristics and stability. The cargo volume ranges from 4.6 m3 for compact, to 5.3 m3 for medium and 6.1 m3 for the long version. The passenger's space is the same.
PROACE Electric is designed for various charging options: connection to quick chargers, or via a cable that accompanies the car to a wall socket or socket.
By using a 100 kW public charging station, the 50 kWh battery can be charged to 80% in about 30 minutes, and the 75 kWh battery in 45 minutes. The vans are provided with an on-board charger that delivers up to 11 kW, optimized to ensure proper charging speed from a wall socket or outlet, and helps to preserve battery life.
PROACE Electric will be available in two levels of equipment, Basic and Comfort. Basic has a specification similar to the existing PROACE model with DAB + radio as well as 3 smart cargo seats. In addition, Comfort has 2 zone automatic air conditioners, electrically adjustable exterior mirrors, fog lights, USB ports, storage box under the seat, and parking sensors.
The driver's instruments show speed and power consumption, indications for battery charge status and air conditioner performance, as well as a TFT multi-information display. The model also features leather steering wheel comfort, smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, as well as navigation.
Customers can order the car in September and delivery of the first electric vans will take place towards the end of 2020. (Prices will be announced closer to the launch date.)
The PROACE Electric range will be expanded to include new variants during 2021. PROACE fully electric van will be available with a variety of variants, including short, medium and long body vans, as well as passenger car variants from 2021.
