Volkswagen Group Components is giving a glimpse of a prototype of its mobile charging robot for electric vehicles. It is a visionary concept that will successfully expand the charging infrastructure for electric cars over the next few years. Its task: fully autonomous charging of electric vehicles in small and crowded parking spaces such as underground garages.
The mobile charging robot for electric vehicles acts completely autonomously. He independently drives the vehicle to be charged and communicates with it. From opening the loading flap to connecting the plug to decoupling. The entire process takes place without human involvement.
In order to be able to charge several vehicles at the same time, the mobile robot brings a trailer to the vehicle as a mobile energy storage device, connects it and charges the battery of the electric vehicle. The energy storage remains with the car during the charging process. Meanwhile, the charging robot takes care of loading more electric vehicles. When the charging cycle is over, he picks up the mobile energy storage system himself and brings it back to the central charging station.
The mobile charging robot and VW’s flexible fast-charging stations are sustainable solutions of high-performance charging infrastructure. The flexible fast-charging stations will be launched on the market in early 2021. The mobile charging robot has successfully achieved prototype status and is now to be intensively developed.
Volkswagen Group Components will in future be responsible for all charging activities and charging systems of the Volkswagen Group.
