The electric motor draws power from a small 48-volt lithium-ion battery that can be recharged by regenerative braking.

The hybrid system allows the Fiat 600 Hybrid to travel at speeds of up to 18 mph (30 km/h) on electricity alone, but only for a short distance of 0.6 miles (1 km). Therefore, the electric motor is mainly used to assist the engine during acceleration, reduce turbo lag, and improve fuel efficiency and emissions.
