The electric motor can be either a 53-kilowatt unit that works with the 1.8-liter engine or an 80-kilowatt unit that works with the 2.0-liter engine. The hybrid system also includes a battery pack that can be either a nickel-metal hydride pack with a capacity of 6.5 ampere-hours or a lithium-ion pack with a capacity of 13.6 ampere-hours.

The most exciting addition to the hybrid lineup is the plug-in hybrid variant, which uses the same 2.0-liter engine and electric motor as the regular hybrid, but with a larger lithium-ion battery pack that enables an all-electric range of up to 41 miles. The plug-in hybrid variant also has a higher combined output of 223 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, which makes it the most powerful version of the 2024 Toyota C-HR.

The hybrid system is paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) that optimizes the power delivery and efficiency of the vehicle. The CVT also has different driving modes that can be selected by the driver, such as Eco, Normal, Sport, EV, Trail, Snow, and Charge Hold. The driving modes adjust various parameters such as throttle response, steering feel, suspension stiffness, regenerative braking intensity, traction control, stability control, and battery management.

The fuel economy rating of the hybrid variants depends on the engine size, battery type, and drivetrain configuration. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) models with the 1.8-liter engine and nickel-metal hydride battery have an estimated rating of 54 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway. The FWD models with the 2.0-liter engine and lithium-ion battery have an estimated rating of 44 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) models with the same engine and battery combination have an estimated rating of 40 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. The plug-in hybrid models have an estimated 94 mpg-equivalent (MPGe) rating in combined driving.

Safety and technology features

The 2024 Toyota C-HR is not only efficient but also safe and smart, thanks to its array of advanced driver assistance features. The crossover comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, road sign assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2024 Toyota C-HR also offers optional features such as a blind spot monitor, parking assist, head-up display, wireless charging, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Pricing and availability

The 2024 Toyota C-HR is expected to go on sale in the US in early 2024, with a starting price of around $23,000. The crossover will compete with other popular models, such as the Honda HR-V, the Hyundai Kona, the Kia Soul, and the Nissan Kicks.
